Teen Suicide - Statistics (Continuation) & Opinion

Teen suicide is a very serious issue that does not get a lot of attention. I don’t know why it doesn’t get a lot of attention since large percents of people, including teens have once considered it. It is an interesting fact that for some reason more males commit suicide then females. There are many things that can lead to someone deciding to commit suicide and there are a lot of ways to prevent it. In most cases it is not just a spontaneous decision and the victim has likely been depressed for a while. Substance abuse is also another major cause for teen suicide along with depression.

It bothers me that teen suicide does not get a lot of concern. It is a huge problem that most people don’t even consider. If there was more done to help prevent teen suicide, then it would definitely lesson the amount of victims. Because teen suicide is such a big problem there are hotlines and centers that are dedicated to the problem. One of the problems for teen suicide can also be lead back to gun control because suicide is commonly committed with an automatic weapon. When it is an automatic weapon it is usually owned illegally or one of the parents guns. Making the laws on gun control stricter could also help the cause of preventing teen suicide.

People need to start to realize that teen suicide is a big dilemma going on all over the country. It is a problem everywhere too so does not think that the problem is not around you. A lot of people you know have more than likely thought about doing it at least one time in their lives.

  1. We all know someone who has contemplated suicide. Some people just do not realize the huge problems that go on in teenager’s lives. The problem is not the teenagers themselves, but also the world around them. In some states a gun control law is good, but then other states need them for other reasons other than preventing teen suicide. Illegally using a parent’s gun can make the parent who owns the gun feel responsible, when the reality is that they most likely are not. Substance abuse, the drugs illegal or legal can cause teens to experience bad emotions. The hotlines are helpful in having an understanding person to talk to about the situation.

Many people need to know the signs and statistics of teen suicide and depression. Many people do not realize how long a person can be depressed before they contemplate suicide. If more people knew the warning signs, the more we can prevent it.

  2. The fact that more males commit suicide then females is surprising. I would expect females to be more likely to commit suicide since every girl wants to be today's society's perfect girl. Small, thin and pretty seem to be the most important things to most females, but I guess with these facts it is proven that males may be more concerned with their image. Actually, men do seem to be a higher candidate believing that being muscular and attracting many girls is the way to go. The public needs to be more open and aware to suicide amongst teens.

I agree with Patrick in which over dose of drugs is usually the main method in which a teen attempts suicide. Many parents cannot legally own weapons and a teenager would be too afraid to actually hang themselves. Drugs are already problems in a teenagers life and seem to be easily accessible to them. Teens feel it is the easy way to go out, with no pains.

  3. I Believe that people do but a big emphasis on the matter. Maybe its not seen all the time or made public but I know when my friend was going through it she got a lot of attention not only by me but by a lot of others to. I feel that if you see depression in a friend or in someone you know you should get them help because it could help save someones life.

And weapons don't kill it is the people that is shooting it that is the killer. Even if there were no guns in the house or they were not owned illegally the teen would still find a way to kill themselves if they really wanted to. They could hang themselves or even take a kitchen knife and stab themselves to death. So just because they do not have a gun wont stop any teen from doing what they set out to do.

Teen suicide should not be taken likely and you should at least know some of the warning signs to help prevent it. Imagine if everyone had one friend who knew the warning signs and acted on them if they saw it in someone, how many lives you would be saving.
